BrandCom is a strategic branding and marketing consultancy helping organisations navigate complexity and create value in a changing world. For more than twenty-five years, we have worked with organisations building something new, navigating change, or rethinking how an existing system works.
90% of our clients come to us because they understand we can make them money. The other 10% come because their brands are in trouble.
— Geoff Matthews
Our central belief
Brand is not an output of marketing, but the organising system through which coherent strategy, trust, and value are built.
How we work
Our work is diverse. Our skill base is extensive. We don't limit ourselves to what we have done in the past. We tailor solutions to our clients' needs.
01
Brand strategy should drive business strategy. We begin by understanding the organising logic of your organisation before anything else.
02
Meaning and strategic intent. We create brand stories that translate complexity into clarity ideas people can understand, relate to, and take forward.
03
Systems, structure, and organisational coherence. Brand shapes how decisions are made, how systems operate, and how an organisation is built.
04
Expression and commercial reality. We bring work to market from major launches and product introductions through to operational roll-out.
We work across
Selected work
Strategic projects where brand was the organising system shaping how organisations were built, positioned, and made to work in the real world.
Strategic Project · Events
From inception, we set out to create one of New Zealand's most iconic events right off the bat. In year one, Motatapu became New Zealand's largest mountain bike event, its largest off-road running marathon, and its third largest marathon overall. Twenty-five years on, it remains the largest off-road event in New Zealand.
Strategic Project · Food & FMCG
BrandCom's involvement began at company formation defining strategy, shaping the commercial logic, and building the narrative that guided capital raising and execution. Geoff became CEO, leading the company to Deloitte Fast 50 status and six New Zealand Food Awards including the Supreme Award. Secured placement with The French Laundry, Napa Valley.
Strategic Project · Technology
Conceived in a Queenstown café, built from scratch. The first fully automated tax refund system in New Zealand a process that took a skilled IRD operator 22 minutes now completed in under five seconds. The first non-government platform ever to connect directly with the IRD mainframe.
The team
BrandCom is led by a small, senior core, supported by a long-standing network of trusted collaborators. Projects are shaped and led at senior level, with teams formed deliberately around the problem at hand.

Digital Media and Content Production
Tom Matthews has grown up close to BrandCom’s work, watching brands being built from the inside rather than only studied from the outside. He brings a fresh generational perspective to the practice: intuitive, media-literate, and naturally attuned to the way people now discover, judge, share and respond to ideas in a contemporary digital world.
